Why did we choose to start a class about Fraternal Change with a service project?
I would assume that reason that we started off the class with a community service project is to emphasize Greek Life's commitment to community service. As value based organizations, one the values that we should continually practice in our chapters is community service. All to often fraternities and sororities mistake community service with philanthropy and simply write out a check. Philanthropy and community service projects are both equally good acts of of kindness and no one is better than the other, but each is different.
As for philanthropy this is money that people are giving away to other less fortunate individuals. Money does solve most of the problems, but sometimes people just want to know they live in kind world in which people treat each other with compassion. For me the highest form of showing compassion giving people your time. Human contact is being lost these days with technology, in which texting and chatting these days is more popular than talking to someone.
With all this being said I would like to see more fraternities and sororities doing more community service in the OSU and Columbus community.
What did you learn about yourself and your peers as a result of our shared experiences today?
I learned that even though I feel at times that I am not fortunate enough to give back, I should always be humble for what I have. Even though I feel like I do not have much, I feel like I have plenty to contribute when I with a group of people who have the same purpose of giving back. Being apart of a committed group provides the opportunity to pull together each other's resources and make a difference.
